THOUGHT OF THE DAY:

People who think they know everything are a great annoyance to those of us who do.  Isaac Asimov

MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE:

Tracey Everett and the Winnipeg committee members were able to meet and tour the Airport Hilton on October 23, and see what the rooms and facility look like. They were also pleased to meet with the Hilton hotel representatives, Karen and Sarab, to solidify the layout for the Reunion, and to see the rooms that are booked for our event.

Polo Shirts/Vests: The Executive has again researched polo shirts and vests to sell at the reunion. To see samples of red polo shirts and blue vests click here. Due to increased costs of resources and shipping, the polo-shirt now costs $36 and the vest costs $46 (Note: our website still has the old prices). A minimum order of each type is required to place an order. If you are interested in purchasing a shirt and/or vest, please email us here this month to let us know. We will let you know in the next newsletter if we have enough interest to make an order.  More information will follow if we meet the quota.

Travel update: On October 6, Prime Minister Trudeau said “All would-be travellers must be fully vaccinated by Oct. 30 to board planes, trains or marine vessels." See full article here.  https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/federal-vaccine-mandate-1.6201528

THE HISTORY OF LAW BEHR

Recently, Liz Winchester gave Tracey Everett a stuffed bear, with an air force tie and hat. Her name is LAW Behr, and she has traveled to different reunions since 2003. She will travel to Winnipeg with us.

This is the letter that came with LAW Behr:

During her time in Winnipeg, I have found her to be cheerful, a good companion and willing to do whatever was asked of her.  But this is only as one would have expected of one of her group.  She has the ability to evoke good memories.  She has recalled for me the moment of pure magic when more than four hundred women of indeterminate age began to sing softly in a makeshift chapel in a hotel in Edmonton.  Then at other times she can make one shake with laughter as she evokes memories of shared comedy as a beautifully dressed guest cause the group to reflect on the more ridiculous aspects of being a woman.

As of December 2003, she has been posted to Kingston, Nova Scotia.  During her time with you, may she bring you happy memories of Edmonton and of the long-ago time when you were an airwoman.

And when it’s time for her to be transferred again, please see her off with pleasure and wish those whom she is going to, health and happiness.  With good fortune we may meet her again in Cornwall.

WINNIPEG TRIVIA

Emergency line - Winnipeg was the first city in North America to use a central emergency – more commonly known as 9-1-1. At the time, however, the emergency number was 9-9-9.

WOMEN IN THE NEWS
Women in Space: Sgt Mandie MacKenzie

"Sergeant Mandie MacKenzie, a Senior Space Watch Crew Chief at the Canadian Space Operations Centre (CANSpOC), sees UN World Space Week as an opportunity to inspire other women interested in the space domain.

“Women can understand space and women can contribute to space, and our contributions are vital,” said Sgt MacKenzie. “There has been a glass ceiling for so long, so to be able to participate in and contribute to Canada’s future in the space domain has a lot of meaning.”"
